Scientific name Anacardium occidentale

Cashew, Anacardium occidentale, is an evergreen tree in the family Anacardiaceae grown for its edible fruits (nuts). The cashew tree has a branching main trunk and characteristic domed crown. The thin foliage of the tree is limited to the ends of the branches and is made up of oval-oblong leathery, shiny dark green leaves. The leaves are smooth with pronounced veins and midrib and possess petioles which are swollen at their base. The tree produces numerous pinkish-white flowers on drooping panicles and a kidney shaped true fruit (nut) which is approximately 3 cm (1.2 in) long with a gray-brown shell and develops from a fleshy accessory fruit, sometimes referred to as the ‘cashew apple’. The cashew apple is pear shaped and red to yellow in color. Cashew trees can reach a height of 12 m (39.4 ft) and have an economic lifespan of 25 years after which time they are replaced in commercial plantations. Cashew originates from Brazil.

NLSG denotes Next Lower Size Grade. NLG denotes: Next Lower Grade.

GRADES

Cashew Kernels are graded into white/scorched wholes,pieces,splits,butts etc.. depending on the shape,size & colour of the kernel.The Govt.of India  Act prescribes 33 different grades of cashew kernels. Only 26 grades are commercially available and exported. They are:

W – 180, is the ‘ King of Cashew ‘ – They are larger in size and very expensive.

W – 210, are popularly known as ‘ Jumbo ‘ nuts.

W – 240, it is an attractive grade which is reasonably priced.

W – 320, are the most popular among cashew kernels and highest in terms of availability, worldwide.

W – 450, are the smallest and cheapest white whole kernels and hence the favorite among low priced whole grades.

Scorched wholes are another grade of cashew kernels, which have a slight brown colour due to longer roasting. They have all the other characteristics of white kernels and have the same nutritional qualities.

Butts, splits and pieces are   priced lower and are ideal for cooking, preparation of sweets and savoury snacks.

Packaging

Packaging available for export of blanched cashew kernels in bulk are as follows

  • Carton containing one 50 lbs flexible pouch

  • Carton containing two tins of 11.340 Kg net each
  • Carton containing two tins of 10 Kg net each

Shipments from India are mainly in 20 ft containers which carry about 700 Cartons.
